Thick Points of the Gaussian Free Field

The d − dimensional Gaussian free field (GFF) is a natural d − dimensional dimensional time analog of Brownian motion. It places an important role in statistical physics and the theory of random surfaces. This term paper will focus on the case where d = 2. Let D ⊂ C be a bounded domain with smooth boundary and C∞ 0 (D) denote the set of smooth functions compactly supported in D. The Dirichlet i...

18.177 Final Project: Thick points of a Gaussian Free Field

What follows is a paper based entirely on the paper "Thick Points of the Gaussian Free Field" by Xiaoyu Hu, Jason Miller, and Yuval Peres [1]. The purpose of this paper is both to convey that I read and understood the paper [1], and also to hopefully serve as a more intuitive/less rigorous explanation of the statements and proofs of Theorems 1.1 and 1.2 in [1]. After reading this paper, the rea...

U ∇f(x) · ∇g(x)dx. The set T (a;U) of a-thick points of F consists of those z ∈ U such that the average of F on a disk of radius r centered at z has growth √ a/π log 1 r as r → 0. We show that for each 0 ≤ a ≤ 2 the Hausdorff dimension of T (a;U) is almost surely 2− a, that ν2−a(T (a;U)) = ∞ when 0 < a ≤ 2 and ν2(T (0;U)) = ν2(U) almost surely, where να is the Hausdorff-α measure, and that T (a...

Gaussian free field and conformal field theory

In these mostly expository lectures, we give an elementary introduction to conformal field theory in the context of probability theory and complex analysis. We consider statistical fields, and define Ward functionals in terms of their Lie derivatives. Based on this approach, we explain some equations of conformal field theory and outline their relation to SLE theory.

Blanket times and the Gaussian Free Field

The blanket time of a random walk on a graph G is the expected time until the proportion of time spent at each vertex approximates the stationary distribution. In 1996, Winkler and Zuckerman conjectured that the blanket time is of the same order as the cover time. Ding, Lee and Peres proved this conjecture in 2010 by relating both terms to the maximum of the Gaussian free field on G. We outline...
